Frequently Asked Questions

What is mastering?

Mastering is the final stage of the recording process and the last chance to make changes before duplication and distribution. Mastering is the final sonic polishing of a mix; it is what takes a mix to its fullest potential without compromising the original quality. Aside from enhancing a mix, mastering unites all of the songs together as a whole and brings out the best in every song.

Do you offer test mastering?

Yes! If you are unsure if your mix(es) will benefit from mastering I am happy to provide you with a free test master.

What do I need to provide you with prior to the mastering session?

I will need the following information: Artist or Band name, Album Title, Song order, Song Titles, and IRSC codes (if you have them).

How do I get you my mix(es)?

You may use https://wetransfer.com, https://www.dropbox.com, or any other file sharing sites.

What formats do you accept?

Your mix(es) should be delivered as stereo WAV or AIFF files with a sample rate and bit depth of 44.1 kHz/24 bit or higher. The file(s) should be free of any clipping and distortion to ensure the best possible mastering results. MP3's and lossy audio files are not accepted.

How much "Headroom" should my mix(es) have?

Your mix(es) should be free of any severe stereo bus processing (Brick-wall limiting, loudness plugins, or heavy bus compression). A good practice is to keep the digital peaks below -3dBFS, this will insure that your mix(es) have plenty of headroom for mastering.

Do you allow revisions?

Every project comes with 1 free mastering-related revision. Additional revisions will be charged at the Alt Mix rate of $35/version. Any revisions unrelated to mastering will be charged $60/hour 1 hr min.

What will I get when mastering is finished?

When the mastering process is completed you will receive the production master(s) for digital distribution. Standard delivery format is 44.1 kHz/16 bit .WAV files. Other file formats available on request.

If your project includes a CD release you will also receive a DDP Image which you will provide to the disc duplication facility of your choosing. You will also receive a .Wav file of the full song sequence so you can easily audition the project from start to finish with all of the gaps and fades in place.

If your project includes a vinyl and/or cassette release, you will receive a separate folder containing the project que sheet, and the digital pre-master files for each full side length (Example: Side A,B,C,D,etc).
